The P.A. People achieves Australian Event Awards National Nominee 2023 for ‘Production Company of the Year’!
The P.A. People are Australia’s leading supplier of Event Communications and Audio Systems for sport and public events. For this year’s Event Awards, we are celebrating our long-term relationships with some of Australia’s leading sporting franchises and major public events….
Peter Grisard, Manager, Venue Engineering writes: ‘It’s been a very busy time at The P.A. People – so busy that the last time I looked up it was February and now Christmas is looming! So many staging projects completed in a short time frame, including the design and installation of two complete counterweight systems, one of which was equipped with innovative front-loading counterweight cradles.’ Peter continues; ‘Underway at the moment are a myriad of projects, including the fit out of a new performing arts centre; a new school theatre – complete with motorised acoustic reflectors and a motorised orchestra platform; a hotel ballroom equipped with a clever overhead tracking system, which allows the operator to easily relocate multiple large video screens from one part of a ballroom to another – and a complex technical upgrade for a civic centre featuring Movecat control systems and TheatreQuip drum hoists. To manage this workload our engineering and operations staff base has also grown significantly.’
Event Communications – iconic event support!
From F1GP Melbourne, Vivid Sydney, FIFA Women’s World Cup Unity Celebration, to Suncorp Super Netball, Swifts and Giants at Ken Rosewall Arena and the NRL home games at Netstrata Stadium… our Event Comms team have continued their busy year supporting many of Australia’s iconic events!
Following the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne, the team supported Vivid Sydney with an extensive comms package as well as PA systems at various installations around the CBD. We are one of the hidden yet integral companies supporting Vivid – this year supplying 650 x digital 2-way radios to enable all the security, the volunteers and pretty much all staff over the 8km Light Walk. The event saw The P.A. People build a network over the whole of the site which also included 80 network switches – all temporarily installed on a combination of existing in-ground fibre, temporary fibre and RF links.
“We also provide network to 40 x VMS display boards for directions, each of which has a PA system for emergency crowd control, and there are some 60 x CCTV cameras that we install,” said Chris Dodds.
Additionally, the team provided audio for the Elemental show in Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour, which uses 48 x Celto 10-inch coaxial cabinets in pairs on three-metre trusses with a Bose 18-inch sub at the base of each truss, along with the production sound system for First Light, the Vivid Opening Ceremony, featuring a live performance form Australian Rock legends Yothu Yindi.
Following Vivid, the Event Comms team were asked to provide an unusual audio solution to support the FIFA Women’s World Cup Unity Celebration on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was an early start for the team to ensure everything was in place quickly for the 8am celebrations. Once again the team were able to work alongside the event producers to provide high quality audio systems for the marshalling areas and the actual ceremony on the centre of the bridge, all with a bump-in time of just a few hours.
July saw a return to the sporting arena, with the Events team assisting with a sound system in Qudos Bank Arena to finish off the Suncorp Super Netball season. We provided our Bose ShowMatch PA along with a full duplex Clear-Com FSII communications system for both the major semi-final and the preliminary final. The finals were the culmination of a successful season where we provided venue technical support along with sports presentation requirements for both the Swifts and Giants home games at Ken Rosewall Arena. Meanwhile, a second ShowMatch system deployed on our Bose Carts PA system also returned to Jubilee Netstrata Stadium augmenting the installed system for the Dragons home games for the NRL.

Installed Systems – a new solution for historic Bowral Memorial Hall!
Council’s Manager, Project Delivery Ned Tripkovic says, “Community groups will enjoy a greatly enhanced rehearsal and performance space. The modifications we’ve made are designed to broaden the venue’s use and appeal for touring ensemble and music festivals, inviting a wide range of cultural experiences for our Shire. The Bowral Memorial Hall Refurbishment project was funded by Wingecarribee Shire Council and the Commonwealth government. It is now the Southern Highlands’ premier, multi-purpose cultural and events venue and the P.A people played an important part in delivering the successful project.”
The P.A. People were asked to deliver solutions for Audio, Lighting, Stage Management & Video (functions) within the new facility, which has seen a ‘complete restoration’ of the outside of the building while the interior has essentially been converted to predominantly facilitate orchestral events.
Audio: Left & right arrays were installed using QSC KLA-12 and KLA-181 subs, QSYS Core DSP, Allen & Heath SQ5 mixer and digital stage box, and cabling infrastructure for various points around the building as well as a hearing loop.
Lighting: ETC ColorSource 40 lighting console; Pathport DMX gateway and DMXC splitters; LSC gen6 dimmers; 4 fixed lighting bars (front-of-house); small fixtures on-stage directed to the sound shell.
Stage Management: Paging to dressing rooms and foyer; PTZ camera with stage view links to dressing rooms & foyer – all with touch-panel control.
Video: Panasonic 8000 lumen projector and screen with inputs to feed/relay images; a 275” screen; various Showtech fresnel and profile LED lights.
Theatre Consultant Richard Stuart has worked on aspects of this Venue over a period of 11 years; he commented “The refurbished hall has a high level of technical fit-out, with orchestral and stage lighting, AV presentation and a high-quality sound system, which will allow for a wide variety of performances.”
Installed Systems: New installation for North Sydney Council Chambers
Ross Ford, Project Manager for The P.A. People outlines the treatment for North Sydney Council Chambers. Ross said; “our company has a long-standing relationship with Council, for more than 10 years, and conducts their systems maintenance. We received a brief from Advison and we worked collaboratively to adjust certain recommendations, including the addition of Q-Sys touch panel and Q-Sys cameras.”
The installation proceeded, with The P.A. People recommendations on new gear – including the facility (not previously included in brief, but supplied within budget) – where Council can preview and control their cameras in ‘real-time’. Jeff McKenzie completed all of the programming for the new system design. Significantly, the old equipment was removed, and a new system installed in 4 days. This included: new amps, ceiling-mounted Shure MXA920 Dante mic, QSys PTZ cameras, 6 x Samsung display monitors (55” and 65”), Q-Sys 10” touch panel, and Q-Sys AD-S6T speakers. A new product – an Epiphan Pearl Mini, was also installed for Web-streaming.
Ross Ford said; “the Council had their IT-based capability up and running by the Thursday prior to their (next Monday) first meeting. We conducted all training with their IT Department, which was all understood to the point where the Monday night’s Council meeting proceeded successfully, with positive client feedback on the day after.”
Ian Curry – Manager, Council & Committee Services said; “The P.A. People delivered an AV solution in our Council Chambers, as outlined by our consultants, in a timely and efficient manner.”
