The P.A. People - Spring 2023 UPDATE

TheatreQuip counterweight system for The Play House, Geelong Arts Centre
Manager of Venue Engineering at
The P.A. People, Peter Grisard said;‘this is a significant installation. There are some real advantages of a front-loading counterweight system, both from a functional perspective i.e. weights are loaded from the front, and not from the side - as many others are, and from a safety perspective i.e. the entire system is contained within a frame which is often not the case. We are pleased that the TheatreQuip system provides a fit-for-purpose solution - complementing the overall functionality of the redeveloped Venue'.
Front-loading counterweight system
The Geelong Arts Centre's Play House theatre has been given a full technical (theatre equipment) upgrade to bring the theatre infrastructure in line with the recently completed Little Malop Street Development and the associated theatre venues. As well as new counterweight flying equipment, the Play House has a new audio system, production lighting, stage communications and a refurbished stage elevator. In addition, emergency electrical infrastructure upgrades, replacement house and work lighting and a general refresh to the back of house circulation finishes, has given a new life to the original theatre on the campus. Refreshing a 40+ year old theatre always presents challenges due to the unforeseen and unknown conditions of
the building, but Geelong Arts Centre's refresh has gifted the Play House a well-earned new lease on life and offered presenting companies and technical staff an amazing upgrade to their beloved theatre.

The P.A. People Event Communications Team
… then and now - how we do Event Comms!
‘Whilst domestically The P.A. People's rental team are reasonably well known for our audio systems, what may be less well known is our role in providing production communications and audio systems on a rental basis to the world's largest events’said Chris Dodds, Managing Director.
The P.A. People cut their teeth in specialty audio rentals. In 1985 they revolutionized sound reinforcement for Orchestras and Opera in outdoor spaces in Australia, successfully designing sound systems to critical acclaim for crowds of tens of thousands of people in Sydney's Domain, for the Sydney Festival and Carols in the Domain. In 1992 they re-imagined a Concert Sound system that for many years was the first choice of Artists
such as Gloria Estefan, James Taylor, and Diana Ross.
Through that time The P.A. People also provided significant audio systems and communications support for three Papal Visits in 1986, 1995 and 2008, as well as a number of international events.
After a hiatus from the audio rental scene, in 2018 they pursued an opportunity to return to the large-scale audio rental market when they purchased a significant inventory of Bose Professional ShowMatch array loudspeakers and Linea Research amplification, which complemented their expanded inventory of Community and JBL loudspeakers.
The P.A. People have also extended their association with Yamaha Professional Audio consoles, and have recently ordered a number of new DM7s to expand their fleet of Rivage PM5's, QL1's and QL5's.
On the communications side, The P.A. People provide wired production intercom, two-way radios, wireless full duplex comms, CCTV and stage surveillance systems, theatrical cue lights, video and audio transport systems, to support the production of major sporting and cultural events both domestically and around the world. The P.A. People discuss Venue Engineering
…safety, experience, equipment, capacity
The P.A. People's venue engineering team gives our clients access to over 200 years’ combined experience across engineered design, integration, installation and service. With standards-compliant tools and products, the Company can provide solutions appropriate to Venue type, a range of operational demands and end user groups.
Peter Grisard, Manager - Venue Engineering, for The P.A. People says: ‘In this business, we must constantly remind ourselves that we lift, suspend and move significant gear over performers and audiences, making the issue of fit-for-purpose - gear and people - paramount.’
At the 2023 Integrate Expo in Sydney, and at the recent ENTECH
Roadshow which toured 5 capital cities, The P.A. People participated in an education program with a discussion on ‘Safe Workplaces, your duty of care’. These were led by Peter Grisard, Andrew Mathieson - Chief Engineer, and Tim Pike - Service Manager, QLD. Some of the issues discussed included: Duties of a PCBU under Safe Work Australia; machinery inspections and maintenance; the safety of ‘unknown’ machinery; service provider/certifier types of testing.
Andrew Mathieson said: we come across many questions from venues; “We've always done it this way, nothing's changed - what's the problem?” - “Just certify this - we want someone to come in and say it's okay” - “There's a new safety standard, does my machinery need to be retrospectively up to the new standard?” There is a
great deal of knowledge and experience in the industry however, when it comes to compliance with codes and standards there is less clarity and understanding,’ said Andrew. MORE
