... The P.A. People use Orion Network solution
The P.A. People supplied a two-way radio system for the Wings for Life World Run Held in Melbourne on the 8th of May. The solution consisted of 2 base stations and approximately 140 Motorola DP4801 Digital handheld radios for course staff & vehicles, including zone managers, bike crews, catcher car, support vehicles, coaches and for staff at refreshment stations along the course. The system also included 4 Motorola DM4601 Digital Mobile radios and 2 Clear-Com V-stations directly connected to the Orion radio network which in turn was augmented with a mobile site to ensure effective coverage.
The event takes place concurrently in 34 countries around the world. The event is unique in that all participants start at the same time with no finish line. When a competitor is caught by the catcher vehicle their race is over. The catcher car commences the race 30 mins after the runners and travels at 15km per hour. The speed is increased periodically throughout the race (globally) and the competitor who is the last to be caught wins. The Melbourne course started in Hawthorn East and travelled along the Monash Freeway with road closures for up to 100km. Barry Keem was caught by the catcher car at a distance of 65.71 Km, that ranked him 18th in the world.
Wings for Life is an international not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation with a mission to find a cure for spinal cord injury. Over 100,000 competitors participate in the event globally and 4000 of those compete in Melbourne.
The solution consisted of:
- (2) x Clear-Com IP V-station
- Approximately (140) x Motorola DP4801 Digital handheld radios
- (4) x Motorola DM4601 Digital Mobile radios
- (6) Channels of IP radio interfaces via 4G network
- Orion radio network augmented with (1) mobile site via 4G network
The P.A. People have access to individual radio channels via IP on Orion’s network, allowing us the unique ability to patch any and all radio channels directly through to our digital matrix V-stations without a ‘control radio’.
